Smartpower started in August 1992 with just three people and $50. Quickly, it became a top maker of UPS systems in Eastern India, building its brand. By 2006, it expanded into door and gate automation plus security solutions.
The CEO, Rajiv K. Poddar, born in May 1964, studied Physics and later graduated with a B.Tech in 1990. After working with big companies like Tata Groups and PCL, he started Smartpower. His vision, along with teamwork, made Smartpower a recognized brand. His wife, Dipti Poddar, has managed the company's admin and accounts since the beginning.
Shri Ram Krishna Fouzdar, an esteemed innovator and the father of instrumentation in Eastern India, is the CEO's mentor. He encouraged the CEO to pursue entrepreneurship over a traditional job. Shri R.K. Fouzdar's inventions in educational instrumentation and guidance in developing many West Bengal polytechnics influenced many.
On May 26, 2001, the company expanded its manufacturing plant by 10,000 sq ft using cutting-edge technology. Shri M.N. Roy, the Commissioner of Taxes for the Government of West Bengal, inaugurated this expansion.
In 1999, the technical team went to Taipei, China, to set up a collaboration with a reputable company there for sourcing technology for Online UPS.
